Compound of the Phrygian or Bithynian city-name Μόδρα (see Strabo 12.3) and the title ϝΑΝΑΚ 'king'. Sayce (The Journal of Hellenic Studies, Vol. 46, Part 1 (1926), pp. 29-35) had suggested a connection with Greek μύδρος, which seems unlikely. |
