Etymologicum Magnum

Καὶ πελίωμα, τὸ μέλαν∙ καὶ γὰρ πέλλην λέγουσι βοῦν, τὸν τοιοῦτο χρῶμα ἔχοντα∙ καὶ Πέλλη, πόλις Μακεδονίας, ὅτι βοῦς αὐτὴν εὗρε, πέλλη τὸ χρῶμα∙ καὶ ὁ Πελίας, ὄνομα.ˮ

As Sturz (1808) notes the bovines in Macedonia must have been called like that because their dark color.
