"ὡς νεώτεροι Μακεδόνες καὶ Θετταλοὶ Ἄργος καὶ τὸ ἁπλῶς πεδίον φασὶ, καὶ ἐν ἄλλοις δεδήλωται"


"Ἄργος δὲ καὶ τὸ πεδίον λέγεται παρὰ τοῖς νεωτέροις, παρ᾽ Ὁμήρῳ δ᾽ οὐδ᾽ ἅπαξ: μάλιστα δ᾽ οἴονται Μακεδονικὸν καὶ Θετταλικὸν εἶναι."

From PIE *arg- "bright, fast" etc in the sense of a "clearing, glade".
